Characteristics of a Scholar
Do you have what it takes to win a prestigious award? Below is a list of many characteristics that selection panels look for when determining the winner of their scholarship:
A scholar IS:
  • well-rounded
  • actively involved
  • resourceful
  • interesting and interested
  • well-informed, well-read and articulate
  • not discouraged by artificially imposed boundaries
  • astute and insightful
  • introspective
A scholar HAS:
  • a demonstrated potential for independent research/study
  • a demonstrated commitment to the betterment of society
  • a demonstrated potential for leadership
  • initiative and drive
  • faith in his or her own potential for accomplishment
  • a volunteer record of merit/societal commitment
  • engaged in significant research (e.g. senior honors thesis)
  • long-range vision and career goals
A scholar ALSO:
  • can hold his or her own in intellectual discussions and debates
  • brings out the best in him/herself and others
  • thinks critically
  • enjoys life
  • gives of him/herself
