The Office of Nationally Competitive Awards congratulates our award winners from the 2003-2004 academic year.

Marshall Scholarship National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship
Jessica, a 2003 Goldwater recipient, will pursue a Ph.D. in Experimental Solid State Physics, specializing in organic photovoltaics at the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London. The Marshall will cover university tuition, fees, living expenses, and the costs of books, research, and travel for two years, with a possible renewal for a third year. In addition, the NSF provides a $27,500 yearly stipend and a tuition grant for three years of graduate study. Jessica hopes to obtain a position in a research laboratory or possibly pursue post-doctoral positions with the hope of eventually working in academia.

Fulbright U.S. Student Program-Canada
Diane will study the financial and social impacts of welfare to work programs on single-parent families in Canada. She will work with Canada's leading expert on such programs at McMaster University as well as with a social service agency near Toronto.

Fulbright U.S. Student Program-South Africa/Islamic Civilization Initiative
Andrew will observe, interview and participate in education with Muslim parents and children in Durban, South Africa. He will study the continuity of educational experience between parents and children and how this education relates to preservation of cultural and value systems.

Tiffany is studying public administration, gender, and the Xhosa language at the University of Cape Town and conducting research focusing on nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).

Michael will attend Peking University in the fall in Peace and Security Studies. In the spring, he will be enrolled in the School for International Training, located in Yunnan Province, in Asian Studies. He hopes to eventually obtain a career with the Central Intelligence Agency.

Jennifer will spend an academic year in South Korea studying International Relations and the Korean language at Yonsei University in Seoul. There, she will pursue her career goal of working in the federal government aiding national security.

Fulbright U.S. Student Program-Brazil/Uruguay
Hilary will study how agricultural cooperatives in Uruguay and Brazil are responding to the market conditions created by MERCOSUR. She will interview cooperative farmers and, through contacts at universities and national cooperative organizations in both countries, she will analyze quantitative data on market liberalization.

Guggenheim Fellowship
For her dissertation, Kathy will be studying televised representations of Project Apollo. She will search the archives at Vanderbilt University in the summer and then work with scholars in Washington D.C. in the fall to compare written archives to other media representations.

Morris K. Udall Scholarship
A non-traditional student who has served on the OU Ecology and Energy Conservation Committee and the Environmental Audit Team, Alethea was also recently selected as a McNair Scholar. She will receive $5,000 and will attend a Udall Scholars' weekend in Tucson this summer. Alethea hopes to eventually pursue a PhD in Geography with a focus on Energy and Environmental issues and hopes to obtain a position with a University.

Marshall Scholarship
Natalie, an Ohio University Cutler Scholar, was awarded both the Udall and the Goldwater Scholarships in 2003. The Marshall will cover university tuition, fees, living expenses, and the costs of books, research, and travel for two years, with a possible renewal for a third year. She will study geochemistry and pursue an M.Sc. by Research in abandoned mine modeling at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Natalie's future goals include continued work with abandoned mine remediation and hazardous waste cleanup and a possible career with the Environmental Protection Agency or the Bureau of Abandoned Mine Lands.

Fulbright U.S. Student Program-Chile
Sou will teach English at a Chilean University and serve as a guest lecturer in American Studies courses. She will also take Spanish classes and do independent research on the Asian communities of Chile.
 College of Communication, Master's student in Visual Communication
Fulbright U.S. Student Program-China
Based in Shanghai, Ariana will explore definitions of success in China through a photography project. Using her proficiency in Chinese as well as her photographic skills, she will create picture stories of Chinese citizens in a variety of occupations.
College of Education, Doctoral student in Teacher Education; Center for International Studies, Master's student in Southeast Asian Studies
Fulbright U.S. Student Program-Indonesia
Brett will study the implementation of Conflict Resolution Education (CRE) by teacher education professors in Indonesia. This project will build upon CRE workshops that Brett and Ohio University faculty members have provided to Indonesian teachers.

Fulbright U.S. Student Program-Germany
A future German teacher, James will teach English conversation classes in a German secondary school. He also plans to study German hip-hop music and take a class at a university.

Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Junior Fellows Program
Revati will spend one year in Washington, D.C., where she will be matched with government officials, lawyers, and journalists to conduct research and engage in projects concerning such issues as democracy building, trade and environment, and international economics. There she will work on a non-proliferation project at CEIP. Her future plans are to work as a foreign correspondent and to attend law school in hopes of practicing international law.

Fulbright U.S. Student Program-Spain
Meghan will teach English in a Spanish high school or official foreign language institute. In conjunction, she will create a video of interviews that she conducts with a diverse group of Spaniards. She plans to make this video available for use in Spanish language classrooms in the United States.
College of Communication, Master's student in Visual Communication
Fulbright U.S. Student Program-Mauritius
Uma's photography project will explore rites of passage within the highly diverse culture of Mauritius, an island nation off of the east coast of Africa. She will combine a photo-essay with recorded interviews.

Justin is studying Intermediate Level Japanese at Chubu University in Japan.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
Jack, only a sophomore, will receive an award of $7,500 for each of two years. After graduation, he hopes to attend graduate school to study Astronomy.

Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship for Humanistic Studies
Mandy will receive a tuition grant and a $17,500 stipend for her first year in graduate school. She will begin pursuing her Ph.D. in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology next year at the University of Cincinnati. Her future goals include designing museum exhibits and teaching at a University.
