Two of our students, Nora Rye and Susan Plungis, have won the Charles & Lucille King Family Foundation Scholarship. The King Family Foundation "was established in 1988 to support individuals, institutions and organizations committed to educational excellence and professional development and provide scholarships to outstanding U.S. undergraduate students in four-year, degree -granting programs in television and film. Students are chosen as sophomores or juniors and receive $3,500/year for one to two years. Usually twelve scholarships are given, this year they gave thirteen so that Susan could be awarded!
A West Virginia native, Nora Rye is a sophomore in HTC majoring in video production and is also pursuing an environmental studies certificate. Deeply committed to fair trade and environmental issues, Nora will be traveling to Thailand this summer to help document an ethnographic comparison between a fair trade rice mill and one that operates under conventional methods. Next spring she will travel to Peru to conduct research about a fair trade coffee co-op for her honors thesis. Nora will receive the scholarship for two years. Nora was supported in her application by Sonia Marcus (Office of Sustainability), Frederick Lewis (Media Arts & Studies), Rafael Obregon (Communication and Development Studies), and Eric Williams (Media Arts & Studies).
