Profiles
Goldwater
Jessica Benson, HTC Engineering, Physics
Jessica Benson is an HTC student studying physics and mechanical engineering. She serves as secretary for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and previously served as community service chair for the Mortar Board Honors Society and as vice president and treasurer for the Honors College Advisory Council. She competes in speech and debate with the OU Forensics team, sings in both Choral Union and University Singers, and participates in intramural sports. With the rest of her time, she is involved with Kappa Phi Christian Service Sorority and the Society of Physics Students. Jessica has extensive scientific lab experience, including her current work with Dr. Ralph DiCaprio and Dr. Saw-Wai Hla, both at O.U.
When asked about her experience completing the application for the Goldwater, she said, “[It] has already clarified my plans for the future.  Through the research for my essay, I was able to learn a great deal about a field that interests me: organic semiconductor technology.  I now know that I would like to pursue research of this kind in graduate school and hopefully continue to work with organic semiconductors for the rest of my career. Winning the Goldwater would be a great honor and I am sure it would open many doors for me in the pursuit of my graduate degree and future career goals.  However, the greatest impact that the Goldwater had on my academic career was learning about organic semiconductors and learning about myself through the application process.  I feel more focused as a future researcher and scholar because of it."
Kimberly Borley, Arts & Sciences, Marine Biology
Kimberly Borley is an Arts and Sciences student studying marine biology. She is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta and will be inducted into the Golden Key Honor Society on February 21, 2003. Last summer, Kim worked with Drs. Kuzirian and Epstein at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA. While there, she conducted her own research, presented the results, and published a short journal article. She is currently working with Dr. White on genetics research at O.U.
When asked about her application experience, she said, “It was a real learning experience [that] took a lot of time and effort.  One of the best things is I have already been able to use parts of the application to apply for internships.  This scholarship is known to be competitive and it would be impressive to graduate schools.  Actually getting the scholarship would allow me to use the money I would be saving for while I am in graduate school.”
Jennifer Hartsock, Arts & Sciences, Biochemistry
Jenny Hartsock is a pre-med student studying biochemistry. She serves as publicist for Alpha Chi Sigma Chemistry Fraternity and heads the UCM dinners for Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity. She also holds membership in Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society, AMSA Pre-Med Club and Alpha Lambda Delta. She spent the summer in the Undergraduate Teacher's Assistant Program at O.U.
When asked about the application process and benefits of the Goldwater, she said, “This award has enlightened me to the process of scientific writing with all of its challenges.  I have become a more succinct and capable writer in expressing myself through this application.  If I were to win this award, it would be a testimony to the dedication I try to have for research and would make me greatly stand out as I apply to medical schools.”
Natalie Kruse, Engineering & Technology, Civil Engineering
Natalie Kruse is a Cutler scholar studying civil engineering with minors in math and geology. She serves as treasurer for Tau Beta Pi, while also participating in the Society for Women Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers. She works with several civil engineering groups including the Sunday Creek Watershed Group and the Monday Creek Restoration Project. She has also conducted personal research on acid mine drainage.
When questioned about the application process, she said, “I hope that this award will give me the opportunity to explore and expand my opportunities in the remainder of undergraduate work and as I continue in my schooling. Working with Ann Brown and others during the application procedure helped me learn more about not only the application, but also about myself and what my goals and motivations are.”
Truman
Elizabeth Popp, HTC, Political Science
Elizabeth Popp is an HTC student in political science. She serves as president for the Political Science Majors Association and is a former College Democrat. She has held internship positions in the District Office of Congressman Tony Hall, in the Montgomery County Community and Economic Development Dept., in the Athens County Public Defender Office and at the Institute for Local Government Administration and Rural Development.
When asked about her goals and the application experience, she said, “If I win the award, it will help with admittance to a top ranked Social Policy program, hopefully Harvard, and allow me to maintain contacts with other Truman Scholars who are interested in working to alleviate poverty and inequality in our society. It was a long and sometimes difficult process, but Ann, faculty from different departments (especially Political Science), and others at ONCA gave all candidates a lot of support.”
